The intention of Heide’s new website was to create an informative platform to showcase all current, past and future exhibits. The site needed to be seen as a contemporary art piece in its own right, have longevity in its design relevance (over 2 years) and not dominate or detract from any of the works or exhibitions displayed on the site. To resolve this, fatfish conducted a series of discovery-workshops with the Heide marketing and development teams.
The final design solution was to develop an interactive home-page and customise the navigation functionality. By doing so, the main content areas of the site were kept visually-simple and muted in colour (hence, not overpowering the exhibition imagery). And the technically complex navigation gives the site its contemporary edge.
The interactive background is seen as a newmedia installation that can be refreshed with seasonal colours and textures. In future, other commissioned artists may refresh this space with their own designs and functionality. The neutral content-areas will remain constant throughout the expected long life of the website. www.heide.com.au
